2023 World Relays World Athletics Meet Postponed – OlympicTalk
The Americans easily earned the highest qualifying score at the world gymnastics championships and are favorites to win a record sixth consecutive world title on Tuesday.
Shilese Jones, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, Leanne Wong and Skye Blakeley combined for 167.263 points, edging second place Great Britain by 2.668 points. For perspective, that’s bigger than the margin separating Britain from sixth-place China.
However, qualifying scores are discarded for Tuesday’s team final, as well as Thursday’s all-around final and apparatus finals on Saturday and Sunday in Liverpool, England.
Jones, who was considering quitting elite gymnastics after placing 10th at last year’s Olympic trials, scored 55.766 to qualify second for the all-around final. Olympic All-Around Silver Medalist Rebecca Andrade of Brazil easily earned the best score of 57.332.
Jade Carey, the Olympic floor exercise champion from Tokyo, qualified third for the all-around final. She beat the Olympic team silver medalist Jordan Chiles for the second and final American place in the all-around. Chiles had the Americans’ best score heading into the final qualifying rotation and then fell off the beam twice.
Carey and Chiles were also the top two qualifiers for Saturday’s vault final, as well as Sunday’s floor final. Blakely qualified second for Sunday’s balance beam final. Jones was the fifth qualifier for Saturday’s uneven bars final.
Andrade, the Olympic jumping champion, had the highest jump in qualifying (15.066). But his hand slipped off the device on his second jump. She adjusted to make a much less difficult jump than expected and finished 12th in qualifying, missing this final.
Americans Suni Lee and Simone Biles, the last two Olympic all-around champions, are away from world championships while taking indefinite, possibly permanent, breaks from elite competition. After winning the Olympic team title against the United States, Russian gymnasts are banned from these worlds due to the war in Ukraine.
The men’s qualifications will take place on Monday.
