BBC The Graham Norton Show: Johannes Radebe’s secret love life and struggles with ‘traditionalist mother’ after coming out on Strictly
Johannes Radebe has been a professional dancer on Strictly Come Dancing since 2018 and before that he was a professional on South African Strictly, Dancing with the Stars SA.
Today he is one of the crowd’s favorite dancers and he reached the final of Strictly’s 19th series alongside John Whaite, when the two were beaten to the crown by Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice.
And over the course of the season, Johannes and John have been caught up in several romance rumors. Speaking to the Reign with Josh Smith podcast about John, he said: “I’m in love with the man. And I know he’s a married man – soon to be – but let me tell you something. thing, people come into your life and you I don’t know how you did without them all this time.”
But John debunked all the romance rumors, telling The Sun: “When you spend that much time with someone, you see them with warts and all. I think I burped in Johannes’ face – I I maybe even farted at some point. There’s no attraction because you see sweat and stuff.”

In fact, Johannes is notoriously deprived of his love life. There is no information on current or past boyfriends, but one thing he is not deprived of is his love for his mother, Jacobeth, whom he grew up with in South Africa. After his father died when Johannes was 12, his mother raised him and encouraged his love for ballroom dancing.
He said Hello! Magazine: “We struggled financially but whatever we lacked she lovingly made up for. I learned that as long as you have a hot meal, a bed and a roof over your head, you should be grateful. Above all, mom taught me to love and make people around you feel loved. I respect her and I applaud her. She did a phenomenal job and she is unique, my best friend. ”
And Jacobeth was supportive of his son, telling the magazine, “I couldn’t fight the world for my son but I made sure he was loved and treated everyone with respect and kindness. Where are those people now? bullies who laughed at the very thing that launched him into his destiny? I’m immensely proud and happy for him. When I watch him dance, it’s surreal. What boggles my mind is that it’s real and that’s my son.
And although she initially struggled with Johannes’ sexuality, her relationship with John brought them closer than ever, as he told the Daily Mail: “When I told her about the partnership, she said, ‘Oh, are you dancing with a man?’ and I said, ‘yes, I dance with a man and his name is John.’ And there was an awkward silence and she said ‘okay.’ Like everyone else, she waited to see how it would play out because she’s such a traditionalist. I remember our first tango, she called me, and she was like ‘oh that was awesome’ and I was like ‘what?’ It’s been special.”

Johannes officially came out as gay on Strictly, dancing a group routine in heels with a fan emblazoned with the word “pose” alongside dancers with “werk” and “slay” fans. He told Metro: “I knew as soon as I put on those heels and danced with my red ‘Pose’ fan to a rendition of Blondie’s Rapture, everyone would find out I was gay.
“And they did! I had distant uncles from remote parts of South Africa who had once asked me why I didn’t have a wife to tell me they understood why now. The dance itself- even was an extremely beautiful and powerful moment for me.”
