Betty Lawrence Upham, 95, of Williamsburg
WILLIAMSBURG – Betty Lawrence Upham, 95, of Williamsburg, Va., Passed away on December 10, 2021. She was predeceased by her parents and ten siblings.
Born and raised in Newton, Massachusetts, Betty began working as a designer at the Factory Mutual Insurance Company in Boston, where she met her 72-year-old husband, Horace. Betty was an exceptionally creative woman, who loved drawing, sewing, decorating and painting in oils. In addition, she liked ballroom dancing and square dancing. Together with her husband, they established and operated the Upham Square Dance Hall in Kingston, New Hampshire. Betty has used her talents to organize many unique and festive events held at the venue over the years.
In the 1960s, Betty and Horace also started a summer day camp at their lakeside home in Kingston, where Betty taught arts and crafts. “Nana” is remembered as a wonderful grandmother who brightened up life with her delightful sense of humor and cultivated a spark of imagination in those around her. Among other things, she taught her granddaughter Alison swing dance and encouraged her singing career. Recognizing her grandson Alex’s love for history, she set up a little archaeological dig in her garden.
The memory of Betty, her husband, Horace Upham, remains to be cherished; daughter, Linda Upham-Bornstein (Peter Bornstein); and grandchildren, Alison Matthews (Chase) and B. Alexander Bornstein (Janet).
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 15 at the Bruton Parish Episcopal Church, 201 W Duke of Gloucester St, Williamsburg, VA. Condolences can be presented at www.NelsenWilliamsburg.com
