Britney Spears ‘Dance with the Stars’ Week: Cheryl Burke and Cody Rigsby make history in distance competition, 2nd star eliminated

LOS ANGELES – It was a “toxic”, “crazy” and “outrageous” night for the third round of “Dancing with the Stars”. The 14 couples performed to music by Britney Spears.

Thirteen of the duets returned to the ballroom, but Cody Rigsby and Cheryl Burke each performed their jazz routine remotely and solo in the spotlight.

Cody and Cheryl both tested positive for COVID, so they have been safely quarantined, using everything technology has to offer to stay in the competition. They received the lowest score from the judges of the evening, but fans voted them for another week.

Judge Derek Hough did not attend Monday night’s live performance due to possible exposure to COVID.

Amanda Kloots, JoJo Siwa and Olivia Jade are all tied for first place on the judge’s scoreboard with 24 out of 30 points.

Ultimately, it was reality TV star Christine Chiu who got knocked out in week three. And she leaves without regret.

“It’s a 15 year dream and I got to dance three times on the ballroom floor of my dreams. I think I win. I absolutely win,” Chiu said. “And I’m stronger today than yesterday. I’ll be stronger tomorrow than today. It’s just such a great experience.”

The cast and crew had to experience something brand new in this 30th season: a couple quarantined due to COVID. Cheryl Burke had to teach her partner Cody Rigsby a jazz routine via Zoom. And then they played for the judges, not in person, but away from their individual homes.

“We worked hard this week, not only to fight COVID, we were sound technicians, lighting technicians, we had to build the set,” Rigsby said. “And then once we got to the performance, we gave it our best Britney VMA energy!”

The other professional dancers were impressed.

“I support them,” said Val Chmerkovskiy. “I’m glad he has a chance to return to the ballroom. I think they did a great job under the circumstances.”

“I think it gives us all hope that if we end up getting it as well, we have a chance to stay in the competition,” said Jenna Johnson.

There’s a double dose of Disney on “Dancing with the Stars” next week. Monday night we’ll see the Disney heroes and Tuesday it’s the Disney villains.
