SANTA CLARA (CBS SF) – It was an emotional roller coaster for the thousands of San Francisco 49ers fans who flocked to Levi’s Stadium for the team’s first home opener with fans since 2019.

Fan cutouts were gone, as were the strict social distancing and outward masking requirements of the COVID era. Professional football was back and the Faithful 49ers showed up in their best gold and red outfits.

“It’s great to be back, you know I love coming here, I have a season pass,” said Salvatore Lopez Alonzo of Watsonville. “I am the unofficial mascot of the 49ers.”

The crowd went wild as the 49ers’ offense came to life in the dying moments of the first half and into the second half with longtime rivals the Green Bay Packers and quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who played collegially across the bay at Cal.

“If they win that’s a plus, but we’re loyal and it’s great to see that – just watch that, all the fans here for opening day,” said Lorraine Scheu of Fresno.

For many fans, it was the first event they attended alongside tens of thousands of people.

“It’s amazing to be with other souls,” said Mayra Aguilar of Orange County.

While the 49ers encouraged all guests and staff to get the shot, it wasn’t mandatory for entry. Fans also did not need to present negative COIVD tests.

Masks were mandatory indoors and there were no capacity restrictions.

In the last minute of the game, the 49ers rallied to take a 28-27 lead. But Rodgers dashed their hopes by completing two assists to Davante Adams and Mason Crosby scored a 51-yard field goal on the final play to carry the Packers to victory.
